Subject: June Hire Score Newsletter
Welcome to the June edition of the Hire Score Newsletter, the newsletter dedicated to bringing you the latest and greatest recruiting and hiring information. As always, welcome to the new subscribers and welcome back to my loyal readers.
We need to have a frank conversation this month. You see I just can't figure something out.
Last week I was in deep negotiations to provide a very large software company with some specialized training to re-tool their sales organization. At the 11th hour word came down from the top guy that rather than invest in getting his management team the tools and skills necessary to recruit and hire the right salespeople for the job, he wanted a one-page overview on what his people needed to know.
As you might imagine, I passed on the project since it had very little chance of being successful. You see, the number one priority of this organization is to upgrade the sales organization to implement a new business model and the person in charge did not see the value in investing to be able to choose the right people.
Shortly after this phone call, I got a call from my mentor, business partner, certified Selecting Winners instructor and my good friend Bert Mastrov. As I explained what had just happened he asked me a very penetrating question, "What are we missing? Why don't these guys get it?"
It stopped me dead in my tracks. You see Bert and I have been working together since 1980 and Bert many years prior to that teaching people how to recruit and hire top employees. And in all that time it has been an uphill battle.
We have had to constantly evangelize why a company should be interested in recruiting and hiring better employees. They should see this as their top priority. To me it is, and always has been, crystal clear.
And to make matters worse, the popular press and the "hot consultant of the day" have been talking about the importance of having great people. First it was "re-engineering" and then the "talent wars" and on and on. Front page articles of popular business publications have touted the importance of hiring good people for years.
And, I have personally spoken to more than 6000 CEOs of all size companies about the subject of hiring. The response from these executives is unanimous that having a great staff is absolutely key to business success.
So what's wrong with this picture?
How many of you have made an investment in getting better at recruiting and hiring the best employees? Think about it. People are your most importance asset. Great companies all have great employees. Loyal employees lead to greater productivity and greater profits.
Good economy, bad economy, high unemployment, low unemployment, expanding market, shrinking market, high margin product, low margin product -- it just doesn't matter. The company with the best employees almost always wins.
So why have you not invested in the fastest, easiest, surest way to improve your company? What am I missing? What part of the equation is eluding me?
Bert asked me what are we missing. And I just don't have an answer.
Is this discussion self-serving? You bet! Do I want you all to start working with us at Selecting Winners -- yes. But, as with all good deals, everyone wins. It is time to do something to improve your ability to recruit and hire top employees.
The message of this month's newsletter is very simple.
